What to Expect When Adopting a Greyhound

?Thinking about adopting? Here’s what to expect in the first 3 months with Your Greyhound!

With so many wonderful adoptions lately (our hearts are full! ), we thought it was the perfect time to share a few helpful hints for those first few months with a new long-legged lovebug.
Bringing home a Greyhound is like starting a gentle love story – full of little discoveries, funny quirks, and slow dances to the sound of trust building. Whether you’re a seasoned dog person or brand new to the Greyhound world, here’s what the first few months might look like:

Month 1: The Settling-In Shuffle
Think of this as a Grey’s “getting to know you” phase. They might be a little shy, sleep a lot (hello 20-hour naps!), or do a few puzzled laps around the living room. Don’t worry if they don’t seem overly cuddly yet – building confidence takes time.
Tip: Keep things calm, predictable, and low-key. Routine = comfort.

Month 2: The Bloom Begins
You’ll start to see more of a Greyhound’s personality peeking through! Maybe a cheeky roo-roo at breakfast time, a goofy zoom around the backyard, or a favourite toy they suddenly must sleep with.
Tip: Use gentle encouragement and treats to build trust and reinforce good behaviour.

Month 3: The “I Live Here Now” Moment
By now, a Grey’s likely feeling pretty comfy. They’ve scoped out the best napping spots, figured out the food schedule, and might be leaning into you with those signature Greyhound cuddles.

Tip: This is a great time to slowly introduce new experiences – visitors, short car rides, or local walks – while still keeping their safe space at home.

Remember, every Greyhound is different. Some settle in like they’ve always lived there; others take a little longer to bloom. The key? Patience, love, and snacks. (Mostly snacks.)
