Greyhound Adoption Process
Our adoption process is designed to ensure your family and a Greyhound or other sighthound breed would be a good fit for each other. The ultimate goal for GPNL is the long-term protection of the dog.
Below we summarize the the steps in our adoption process.
Step 1 – Apply Online
Complete our Application Form and submit it. You will be contacted within a few days by a GPNL Representative. If you have not heard from us, please contact our Home Visit Coordinator.
In the meantime, feel free to review our Adoption Handbook. It has all the information you need to make an informed decision about adopting a Greyhound.
Step 2 – The Home Visit
Our Home Visit Coordinator will contact you to arrange the first interview. During this first step in the process, one or two GPNL Representatives will visit your home with their own dog. This is an opportunity for you to see how a Greyhound could fit into your home and family.
We encourage you to ask questions, as we will ask you a lot! But don’t be intimidated – it is a chance to see how you and your family interact with the dog(s). It also gives us an opportunity to offer suggestions of items or situations that may need to be changed or moved if you were to adopt a sighthound (e.g., ornaments, holes in fencing, doors that don’t close properly, etc.).
Step 3 – The Second Interview
During a second (and final) interview, we will follow up on any outstanding items or concerns that came up during the first interview.
Step 4 – Meeting Your New Family Member!
The best part – your dog arrives in Newfoundland!
All dogs arrive in St. John’s via air cargo. GPNL takes care of all flight arrangements. You meet your newest family member at the airport to begin this new chapter!
Adoption Fees
We do a lot of fundraising to keep adoption fees as low as possible. The fees cover the cost of your dog’s flight to Newfoundland, spay/neutering, full vaccinations, dental scaling, and microchipping.
Please note that flight fees may vary dependent on the dog’s origin country as well as changes to air carrier fees.
What to Bring to the Airport
Come to the airport prepared! Below is a list of “must have” items to bring along with you to pick up your new family member!
